In the midst of the breathtaking mountains of Bhutan, fate took an unexpected turn for me. It happened when I slipped on a patch of mud, resulting in a fractured ankle. Surrounded by the remote wilderness, we were a challenging 90-minute drive away from the nearest hospital. Strangely, I didn’t experience much pain despite the severity of the injury.
To my dismay, the fall not only broke my ankle but also led to a dislocation on the opposite side, leaving my foot hanging at an unnerving angle. Fortunately, my guide proved to be my savior, carrying me to the car that mercifully wasn’t too distant. The journey to the hospital was a nerve-wracking one, with the looming mountains as a constant reminder of our isolation. Once at the hospital, the staff, thankfully, were warm and attentive, swiftly conducting X-rays and expertly applying a cast.
Embarking on a daunting 16-hour drive spanning three days, we made our way back to the town with the international airport. The relentless change in altitude during the journey took its toll, and a few days later, I found myself battling sickness, adding another layer of discomfort to my already challenging situation, exacerbated by the reliance on crutches.
A stroke of luck came in the form of the tour company’s connections. A family member knew the CEO of the only Bhutanese airline, and I found myself occupying the CEO’s seat on the flight to Singapore. Fortunately, insurance covered the remaining logistics. Upon returning to Australia, prompt surgery became a necessity, followed by an arduous eight weeks of non-weight bearing and the gradual process of learning to walk again. The entire journey, from the majestic mountains of Bhutan to the challenges of recovery, left an indelible mark on my memory.
