I was driving to paramedic school when I witnessed an auto accident 3 cars ahead of me. I parked my car on the side of the road and ran up to help. There was an infant who was thrown from her car seat and wasn’t breathing.
I started CPR on her and she started breathing again. Her lips were blue but color quickly came back, which gave me a huge relief. Her mother was passed out in the front seat and before I knew it, the firefighters from my own company showed up and started working on her. They told me to stay with the baby and keep monitoring her, after giving me oxygen to give to the baby.
AirMed landed at the seen 20 minutes later. The mom was sent to the hospital with minor injuries in the ambulance but the baby was a different story. She kept losing consciousness and stopped breathing and I had to perform a sternum rub to get her to breath again. I had to do this 3 times within 10 minutes.
They told me to carry the infant into AirMed helicopter and then when I got in, they shut the door and took off. I kept my focus on the infant as a pediatric nurse took over treating this little girl.
We got to the hospital and they rushed her into the ER for treatment. They told me she made a full recovery kept her in the hospital for a day to monitor her breathing.
It had to get an Uber back to my car, because AirMed refused to give me an airlift back to my vehicle. I got to class about 2 hours late and explained what happened to my instructors, and he still gave my an unexcused tardy. I said “But I was on an Air Med chopper”Worth it.
